Your Roman Holiday

Planning a trip to one of the most beautiful cities in the world is made easier with our collection of the very best things to do and see in Rome.

The Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain and the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica are some of Rome's best-loved and most visited landmarks but spend a few extra days and unearth the Eternal City's lesser-known treasures.

For the fashion-forward, a stroll through Rome's hippest neighbourhood Rione Monti is a must. The cobblestone street of Via del Boschetto houses bespoke tailors, ritzy boutiques, and bohemian shops. The alternative vibe of this street has become a favourite for up-and-coming designers such as boutique owner Fabrizio of Pulp whose reworked vintage pieces have attracted a cult following.

For a break from the bustle, stroll around the carefully landscaped Villa Borghese Gardens. The second largest public park in Rome also houses the Casa Del Cinema that in 2001 saw a run-down pavilion transformed into the most modern cinema in the city, (also home to a film library and a cafe). A large selection of films including the most recent Venice film festival, with daily subsidised screenings afternoon and evening, meaning most film experiences are free.

Accommodation in Rome ranges from luxe to less. We love the Portrait Roma - a 14-suite bespoke hotel, and just a quick jaunt from the Spanish Steps, this is one of the city's most stylish and private options with a dedicated 'lifestyle team'. Address: Via Bocca di Leone, 23, 00187 Roma, Italy. Phone: +39 06 6938 0742

For art lovers seeking cultural immersion, the Galleria Borgheseis without a peer. Home to one of the world's most valuable private art collections, visitors are admitted every two hours to prevent over-crowding. Don't miss paintings by Caravaggio and Botticelli and sculptures by Bernini.

Divert to the local area of Trastevere and stroll the cobbled streets before selecting a spot at one of the many authentic local restaurants. With the look and feel of a traditional small Italian town, it is often considered the most charming neighbourhood in all of Rome. Well-heeled travellers recommend staying at the Luxury B&B, Buonanotte Garibaldi, an intimate guest house in the heart of Trastevere.

No visit to Rome is complete without some aperitivo time, so for a hip alfresco bar experience head to Piazza Della Madonna Dei Monti but, if desiring something with a little more authenticity make tracks to Ai Tre Scalini at Via Panisperna 251, a bottiglieria that has been open since 1895.
